Argentina, a Leader in Crypto Adoption in Latin America: 19% of the Population Uses Virtual Currencies

Argentina has become a global benchmark in the world of cryptocurrencies, ranking as the fourth country with the highest adoption worldwide and the first in Latin America. According to data from Triple-A in 2024, 19% of the population, equivalent to 8.6 million people, use cryptocurrencies for investment, payment, and savings. The stablecoin USDT leads preferences due to its stability and transaction speed, while Bitcoin and Ethereum stand out for investment and smart contracts. The report also highlights significant growth on platforms like Ripio, Bitso, and Decrypto, which have added millions of users in the past year.

The preference for stable cryptocurrencies reflects the need to protect income against inflation and devaluation. Ripio reported that 55% of its transactions in 2024 were conducted with stablecoins, while Bitso highlighted that 6 out of 10 purchases also focused on these currencies. Additionally, they noted that Argentinians tend to acquire cryptocurrencies at the beginning of the month, coinciding with salary payments. Platforms have also observed an increase in female participation and Generation Z users, solidifying a more diverse audience.

Regarding technologies, networks like BSC and TRC20 are the most used for fast and low-cost transactions, while Ethereum and Solana are preferred for more advanced applications. Platforms have also incorporated new tokens and memecoins, expanding their offerings to meet growing demand. Additionally, companies like Bitso and Bitget have strengthened their security measures with strategic alliances and tools to protect against financial crimes, emphasizing the importance of trust in the ecosystem.

The sector also faces challenges, such as the rise in crypto-related pyramid scams, which has prompted the launch of financial education campaigns. Bitso and Decrypto have promoted educational content and accessible resources for users, aiming to encourage safe and responsible adoption. Initiatives like #Blockchain4Youth and #Blockchain4Her also reflect the commitment to include more people in the crypto world, empowering young people and women entrepreneurs.

In summary, Argentina is consolidating its position as a regional leader in cryptocurrency adoption, driven by the search for financial alternatives in the face of economic fluctuations. Cryptocurrencies not only represent a tool for saving and transactions but also pave the way for a more inclusive and technological financial future.
